While printers in most parts of the globe are being jolted by near-extinction jitters, a group of young college graduates are eschewing the corporate job hunt for a daring stab at the dying sector.
Print advertising and design firm Freeform Creative Solutions, Inc. along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City was set up in 2008 by Jun Galvez, Victor Cruz and Luis Dangilan, all products of the Ateneo de Manila John Gokongwei School of Management.
Lacking previous experience in the industry, the trio turned to the occasional fair and exposition to ease themselves into the trade, and with initial capital borrowed from Mr. Galvez's parents, pitched their shop in front of their alma mater seven months after graduation.
As there is not much room for service differentiation in the publishing field, the owners capitalize on what they call, the “Freeform touch”—seeing to it that the final product is at its most presentable when it comes out, even if it means proofreading the material themselves before it goes to print.
This dogged determination to deliver quality has given the young venture a competitive streak. Companies like L'Oréal and Technomarine have started tapping into Freeform's services for their print materials. “We try to see or think of their product and their requirement as our own,” says Jun Galvez, president and business development director.
While this initial success has brought talks of service diversification to the table, the owners admit that opening a second branch would be a premature move for a firm that has yet to iron out kinks in its operations.
